# How to open a PLY mesh or point cloud

Open 0xr.space, press Open and choose the .ply. The header decides what it is: a PLY with faces opens as a mesh with its vertex colours and normals, a PLY with points and no faces opens as a point cloud drawn as small round dots, and a PLY from a Gaussian splat trainer opens as a splat. ASCII and binary files, in either byte order, are read on a computer, an Android phone or a Meta Quest.

A PLY has no unit and its numbers are read as metres, which is what scanners write; a model in millimetres opens a thousand times too big and needs scaling by hand. A texture image named beside the PLY is not loaded, so a textured mesh shows its vertex colours or plain white. A point cloud is moved to its own centre, and a Quest draws at most 500,000 points at once, a desktop 2 million.

## Steps

1. Export the PLY from your scanner, Meshlab, Blender or splat trainer.
2. Open 0xr.space on the computer, phone or Quest browser, press Open and choose it.
3. Open Info to read its size; a mesh also shows its volume and whether it is watertight.
4. Press View in your space to stand it in the room.

## Questions

### Why did my mesh open as points?

The file has vertices but no faces. Export it again with its faces, for example from Meshlab with the mesh rather than only the points.

### Why is my PLY huge?

It was written in millimetres and is read as metres. Scale it down by hand.

### Can I share a PLY with a link?

A mesh PLY can be shared like any model. A point cloud or a splat stays on the device it was opened on.

### Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read on the device, and nothing is sent to a server unless you create a share link yourself.
