On a Meta Quest 3, open 0xr.space in Quest Browser or the free Model Explorer app, open any model and press View in your space, then press Scan on the dock and look at a chess board on a table. Scan finds the board and lays its lines and a chess engine's three best moves flat on the real board, a few millimetres above it. Each arrow's move and White's score, and a caption with whose move it is and the depth, turn to face you.

It is experimental and has had little use on real boards so far. It needs a Quest 3; a Quest 3S does not draw the board. The headset has no New game, Flip or Side buttons, so it takes White to move first and then follows the moves it sees.

## Steps

1. On a Quest 3, open 0xr.space in Quest Browser or the Model Explorer app, open any model and press View in your space.
2. Press Scan on the dock. When the camera dialog appears, tick Headset cameras, then Allow.
3. Look at the board with all of it in view and keep your head still for about 8 seconds, while the board is found and read.
4. The lines settle on the board and the arrows follow. Press Stop on the dock to end the scan; the drawing goes with it.

## Questions

### Can I use it during a game against someone?

No. Taking an engine's moves during a rated game, a tournament or an online game against a person is cheating under FIDE's and chess sites' fair-play rules. Use it to study or to go over a game after it ends.

### Does it work on Quest 3S?

Not yet. On a Quest 3S the board cannot be placed in the room; there Scan takes one photo instead.

### What does Scan send and keep?

See the privacy page at https://0xr.space/privacy/ for what the camera features send and keep.

### Why is nothing drawn on the board?

The board is placed on the level surface found under it, and nothing is drawn until that surface is found. Dim light, a board seen too steeply or one partly out of view can stop it; a scan in the dark stops by itself.

### Can I tell it whose move it is?

Not in the headset. On an Android phone, Scan has Side, Flip and New game buttons under the picture.
