The vinyl record, also known as a phonograph record, is a timehonored format for analogue sound storage. Made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), these discs operate on the physical encoding of sound via grooves inscribed on their surface. The format gained immense popularity during the mid20th century, especially in the 1950s and 1960s, due to its superior sound quality compared to earlier formats like shellac records.
