The Roman shield, known as the scutum, was an essential piece of equipment for soldiers in the Roman legions. Constructed primarily from wood and covered in leather or canvas, it often featured elaborate designs, including representations of deities or geometric patterns. The curved, rectangular shape provided exceptional protection against projectiles and melee attacks, making it a crucial component in the Roman army’s ability to form tight, protective formations such as the testudo (tortoise) formation.
