The human lungs are essential respiratory organs situated in the thoracic cavity, flanking the heart. They are responsible for gas exchange, where oxygen from inhaled air is absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is expelled. Each lung is divided into sections known as lobes—three in the right lung and two in the left lung—facilitated by a treelike structure of airways comprised of bronchi and bronchioles, culminating in tiny air sacs called alveoli.
