How to use Quest controllers to move a 3D model

Each controller casts a laser with a cursor at its end. Point at the model or a dock button and pull the trigger: the trigger does everything a pinch does with bare hands. A quick pull selects. Pull and hold still to take the model, then move the controller to carry it. Hold both triggers and pull the controllers apart to resize it, or turn them to rotate it.

Only the trigger is used. The grip button and the thumbstick do nothing in the viewer, so there is no thumbstick turn or thumbstick zoom. A trigger pull held longer than about a third of a second is not a click: it starts a hold. Put the controllers down and the hands take over, with the same gestures.

Steps

  1. Open 0xr.space in the Quest browser or the Model Explorer app and open a model.
  2. Point a controller at a dock button and pull the trigger quickly to press it.
  3. Point at the model, pull the trigger and keep still, then move the controller to carry the model. Release the trigger to let go.
  4. Hold both triggers on the model and pull the controllers apart or together to resize, or turn them to rotate.

Questions

Can I zoom with the thumbstick?

No. Resize with both triggers, or press Scale on the dock for Fit to View or Real-World Size.

Why did my button press not work?

The trigger was probably held too long. A press is a quick pull and release.

Do the hand gestures work with controllers?

The trigger stands in for the pinch, so select, hold, double press and both-hand resize all work. Gesture Help under More shows them as hands.

Can I mix one hand and one controller?

Yes. A bare hand and a controller count as the two hands of a resize.
